On the afternoon of December 22, Mr. Ngo Thai Chan, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, stated that in recent times, many enterprises have partnered with farmers to develop organic rice cultivation. These companies not only invest in and support rice seeds, fertilizers, and farming processes, but also commit to purchasing output across tens of thousands of hectares. This approach has contributed to increased productivity and higher incomes for farmers in the Mekong Delta.

“Especially as the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment pilots the project on one million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice linked with green growth in the Mekong Delta, even more enterprises have joined hands with farmers. This is highly commendable. We will continue to replicate this model to build sustainable and effective value chains,” Mr. Chan said.

Mr. Tram Du, General Director of TD Soc Trang Organic Rice Agriculture Company, said that many farmers in communes and districts of Can Tho City such as Ho Dac Kien, An Ninh, Tran De, Lieu Tu, Thanh Thoi An, My Xuyen, and Thanh Tri are currently participating in organic rice farming partnerships with the company, covering a total area of more than 1,000 hectares.

According to Mr. Du, to ensure food safety standards and maintain strict quality control from the rice fields to retail outlets, the company has taken the lead in building a close-knit value chain in collaboration with local farmers.

“This is a closed-loop model, ranging from support for seeds, fertilizers, plant protection products, and cultivation techniques to preferential-interest bank loans and guaranteed product purchasing. As a result, it has attracted a large number of farmers. In the coming period, the company plans to invest in a rice milling plant, completing a fully integrated production chain. Rice produced under organic farming processes is highly favored by consumers,” Mr. Du shared.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hieu, a farmer in Ho Dac Kien Commune, Can Tho City, said he has participated in the organic rice farming linkage with TD Soc Trang Organic Rice Agriculture Company for five consecutive crop seasons.

According to Mr. Hieu, cultivating rice under organic standards not only reduces production costs and delivers high yields, but also allows farmers to sell their rice at higher prices.

“Compared to conventional rice farming, profits are about 40% higher. Thanks to the company’s purchasing commitment, I no longer worry about being pressured by traders at the end of each crop. Organic rice is always sold at a price about VND 2,000 per kilogram higher than conventional rice. I and many other farmers will continue partnering with the company to produce organic rice,” Mr. Hieu added.
